Network democracy and new forms of citizen participation

This event will be attended by politicians , activists , researchers and academics , civil society organizations , developers and hackers to discuss the future of direct democracy and citizen participation in policy making .

Workshop 15:00 to 17:00

Will explore innovative digital methods and tools to strengthen citizen participation in the political process at European level and thereby participatory democracy. It will also discuss public policy at the city level, national and European level to transform the democratic participation and promote transparency to combat corruption within public institutions.

The debate starts from the assumption that our political institutions are in dire need of updating as they are out of sync with 21st century technologies, standards and collective aspirations of citizenship. Democratic institutions have not been able to respond and adapt to new instances of participation, transparency and proximity to the great movements of grassroots participation by the Arab spring, through the 15M in Spain and the formation of new political movements of citizens they did incurzione the institutional landscape as Podemos and M5S, are asking forcefully to the center of public debate.

The crisis of political representation and legitimacy of existing institutions, the applicants corruption scandals that reveal the complicity of the major political parties with the private interest, and the disaffection of the public with respect to the policy can be transformed fielding new democratic practices that transfer power to the people and use new technology to revolutionize democracy.
